I think I will try a Vampire Death Monk now. or actually, I have been wanting to try a Nature Monk for a while, to get to use that spell that allows me to attack all adjacent squares once. They get a speed bonus at higher levels, which can be combined with the speed bonus that monks get as well - View image here. You can play with your character for hours, days, weeks, months, years!! and then have him trip over some trap and 'boom' you're dead. So you start again, looking for a reliable light source, start to collect all those neat items, have to kill the pesky dog. It may be said of any game or endeavour "it is a waste of time and effort", but for Zangband, it is a truly ferocious waste of effort. You continually go down the dungeon looking for nasties and as you find them you have to work out strategies for dealing with 'em.Ĭompare that with your average First Person Shooter - Quake3, or Unreal Tournament - there you biff it out over 10-30 minutes, and see how you go. At the end of 30 minutes you have wasted 30 minutes. With Zangband, you invest -days- or -years- of your life working on one quest after another, and to what end? "Zod died of old age, level 32 monk, 18,902,311 moves". I like watching the Automatic Angband Bot playing. Just sit back and watch it explore the dungeon quicktime! It works pretty well, and whilst it isn't the smartest thing on the planet, you can watch the game zoom by in quick time, and say 'well, that was fun', then move on, having only wasted a very samll fraction of the amount of time you would have had to spend had you done all that work yourself - View image here: -Īngband isn't a game, it's a way of life. Much like Evercrack, but without the interaction with other players. Put caps in butts and watch your score go higher and higher, and lead your team to victory. But it is in small easy to digest chunks. Angband is about small chunks of time added up over days or weeks. I've been sucked in to Caravel DROD (Deadly Rooms of Death). DROD is a smidgeon like Angband with NO character development or items.
